Sergio, nine years old, only child, has an amazing fancy and his parents are too busy to look after him. Each summer his family moves to the country house, just outside Verona. It is a beautiful house framed by fields and woodlands. Sergio has some friends there, but he prefers staying by himself in his imaginary worlds which have a feeble edge with the real one. When his parents inform him about the birth of a brother or sister, he begins to imagine his new life, dreaming of playing with them. Sergio also realizes that his parents’ attention will be reduced more and more and he will lose many advantages. In his fancy, he plays with his not yet born little brother and his jealousy becomes so strong that Sergio imagines to burn him alive on a grill… When his mother loses the baby, he feels guilty and he asks forgiveness to his imaginary brother, who replies pitilessly: ”As I am dead, you must die as well”. Only through a sort of ritual sacrifice, Sergio can calm his imaginary brother’s anger and continue to share his fantastic world with him. Five years later, while Sergio is about to go on holidays… Sinossi: Verona, 1970. Sergio, nove anni, figlio unico, ha molta fantasia e i suoi genitori, molto indaffarati come tutti i genitori, si occupano poco di lui. Come ogni estate, Sergio, il papà e la mamma lasciano l’appartamento di Verona per andare nella casa di campagna. È una bella casa, immersa nel verde di prati e boschi. Sergio ha qualche amico, ma preferisce stare da solo, anche perché riesce a passare con molta facilità dal mondo reale a tanti altri mondi immaginari. Quando la madre e il padre gli dicono che arriverà un fratellino, o una sorellina, lui comincia a vederseli davanti nei suoi giochi fantastici. Sergio pensa che, con la nascita di un fratello, dovrà rinunciare a molti privilegi e che l’attenzione dei genitori diminuirà ancora di più. Nelle sue fantasie, gioca con questo fratellino ancora non nato e si spinge parecchio in là, fino a bruciarlo vivo su una graticola... (continua). Quando la madre perde il bambino, Sergio viene sopraffatto dal senso di colpa e cerca di ottenere il perdono dal fratello immaginario, ormai destinato a rimanere tale. Per tutta risposta, il fratello, severamente e semplicemente, gli dice: «Io sono morto e adesso devi morire anche tu». Soltanto con una specie di sacrificio rituale, Sergio riesce a placare il fratello immaginario e a riaverlo accanto nel suo mondo fantastico.
